Advantages: See the stars, great touristy spot, Hollywood sign
Disadvantages: A bit tacky, don't go there after dark
So, I think everyone who visits Los Angeles should be told before they go that Hollywood, and in particular Hollywood Boulevard, is not this rich, beautiful, fancy place that everyone thinks it is, then they will not be disappointed when they get there.
I lived in America for quite a while, California to be precise and it is quite funny to hear people's perception of area.
In 1958, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which runs from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue, was created. The first star was placed in 1960 as a tribute to artists working in the entertainment industry. There are now hundreds of stars and it is really fun to walk up and down the street spotting all the names of famous people and have your photo taken with them.
If you are there purly to see the hand prints it is a great touristy site. The hand prints are located at Manns Chinese Theatre. Among the theatre's most famous traits are the autographed cement blocks that reside in the forecourt, which bear the signatures and markings of many of Hollywood's most revered stars and starlets. Apparently there are now over 200 hand and foot prints. It fun to see these and see how small some of the foot prints are and compare them to your own.
Manns Chinese theatre is very old Hollywood and if you can, go see a movie there because the screen is massive and it's really a fun experience, reminiscent of "Old Hollywood". Next door, Hollywood and Highland is a newish complex with some luxury shops that was built to include the new theatre for the Oscars. If you walk up the steps to teh viewing platform you get one of the best views of the Hollywood sign in all of LA. Fun for the kids as dressed up characters are always about, Superman, Batman, Marilyn Monroe but be warned, if you want your photo taken with them they really expect payment!
But yes, be warned, Hollywood Boulevard is dirty, full of naughty shops and don't go there after dark as you are never sure who you might meet but it is definitely an experience not to be missed!
Summary: A must see tourist spot if you're in Hollywood

- 19/05/08 Tacky indeed, but it still draws people. My wife insisted on trekking over from Santa Monica to see it, despite my warning her what it was like. |
