The Hollywood sign was built in 1923 originally to promote local housing. It has now become synonomous with films, fame and fortune in America. It hasn't always been plain sailing for the sign though. It has been attacked by everything from termites to arsonists. Despite its trials and tribulations it is still a world famous symbol. With all of the publicity of the Oscars going on at the moment, I thought I should bring you news of the plight surrounding the famous Hollywood sign. It sits atop a hillside in the vicinity of one of the richest and most famous film studio areas in the world, Hollywood, California. It was built 78 years ago in 1923 by the Hollywoodland Real Estate Group and was intended to last for only a year and a half yet its still there after all of this time. Most people on earth has heard of Hollywood. I believe the number of people who has seen the big 'Hollywood' sign (from magazine, tv, movies, newpaper etc) is not much less than that. But how many people has come close to the 9 giant letters put on the high mountain? I don't know but we tried to drive up the mountain to reach the sign. We spent the whole morning wondering our way on the winding and slanting road, with the helps from people living nearby.
