The Hollywood Sign is a universally famous landmark situated in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, California. The sign overlooks the city of Hollywood, the show business capital of the world, home to countless movie studios, record labels and live television shows and also to a whole book of famous celebrities. You can see it from the plane as you fly in to LA, and you can also see it from a good distance away from Hollywood, it does not take much driving from the airport to be able to see the sign in the distance. I visited Hollywood at the beginning of this month, staying on Hollywood Boulevard itself, and the Hollywood sign was something that I became increasingly familiar with.

The Hollywood sign is made up of nine 50 foot tall letters, that are coloured white and arranged in an abstract snake like way. Apparently it used to be possible to get right up close to the letters, but this is now not possible due to security reasons. You can get to the rear of the letters by hiking up a hill trail, or you can get fairly close in terms of seeing distance by visiting an observatory in the hollywood hills themselves. The sign is very easily seen from Hollywood Boulevard, and there are special viewing platforms at the Hollywood and Highland Centre which have a direct forward facing view of the sign.

One thing I was disappointed about was the Hollywood sign at night. I expected it to be brightly illuminated and clearly legible, but all you can see are three small lights where you know the sign to be located, you have no idea otherwise that the sign even exists at night time.

The Hollywood sign is one of those famous points that it's really hard to miss, because you can see it from far and wide, whether it is your intention to or not. It's worth seeing, it's one of those places that you have literally seen so many times on television or in magazines that when you see it in life, you pause and think "wow" isn't the world amazing. Bear in mind too that apparently it is sometimes not possible to see the sign in foggy weather, so allow yourself a few days for the opportunity, just incase.

Summary: You have to go see the Hollywood sign, it's just too famous not to go at some point.
