Jim Thompson Thai House. Who was Jim Thompson? Jim Thompson was an American entrepreneur born in 1906 in Greenville, Delaware. He attended university and trained as an architect. He volunteered to join the Army and became a member of the OSS a forerunner of the CIA and served in France, Northern Africa and Asia. He was trained in jungle warfare and jungle survival. ****Introduction**** On a recent trip to Thailand I had a few days in the fantastic city of Bangkok. There is so much to say about this truly wonderful city, but the highlight for me was a trip to Jim Thompson's house. Jim Thompson was an American architect who moved to Thailand soon after World War 2 and quickly became fascinated by Thai architecture and culture. In order to raise the profile of Thai architecture internationally he set about dismantling several centuries old structures from various parts of Thailand and moving them lock, stock and barrel to Bangkok. He used the materials from these buildings to create six teak houses that perfectly adhered to contemporary Thai design. While in Bangkok my girlfriend and I went to visit the house of Jim Thompson, and American who was very influential inthe silk trade. In fact his silk houses, or shops, are still around and far more famous than where he used to live. Anyone bored with temples, or looking for something a bit different to do would be well advised to visit here. The man himself is as interesting as his home, and I'll furnish you with a bit of background before moving on to the house.
