Lindos ......... where do i start? To me Lindos is my favourite place in the world, so much so we are getting married there in 2011 because to us there couldnt be a more romantic place.
Lindos is a picturesque, quaint little white washed village on the greek island of Rhodes which is home to the famous acropolis, a huge tourist attraction. As so much of medieval Lindos has survived it has actually been declared a national landmark.
Lindos was founded by the Dorians, who were one of the three major tribes of the ancient greeks, led by King Tlepolemus in around the 10th century BC. In 300BC the acropolis was shadowed by the huge temple of Athena Lindia which was built on the site of a previous temple and through the years had more buildings added to it, still parts of this building may be seen at present. In the 14th century the now extended version of Athena Lindia was partly overlaid (due to disuse) by a Fortress built by the knights of st john in order to defend the island.
Many of the buildings in Lindos have survived since the 15th century with little change and they are truly beautiful, the little cobbled streets apparently allow small delivery vans and motorbikes but i have only ever seen donkeys and people on foot. The architecture is a mixture of byzantine greek and gothic with middle eastern influence and is truly breathtaking. The village has many 'Captain's houses' which date from around the late 1640's i believe and one of them serves as a beautiful restaurant.
The beaches in Lindos are gorgeous, north of town in lindos bay is a lovely sandy beach called pallas beach which gets very busy in the summer months. Just south of town is a beautiful bay, a natural harbour which is named St Pauls Bay and is home to St Pauls Chapel, which is a beautiful white washed chapel overlooking the bay which i will be getting married at in 2011 (yay). St Paul was supposedly shipwrecked here during a storm in the 1st century AD.
There is only one hotel as far as i am aware which is actually in Lindos and that is the beautiful yet rather expensive Hotel Melenos, there are plenty of villas to rent in this beautiful village though and i would highly recommend a stay in Lindos. The night life is good (unless you expect to be clubbing, then falaraki would be more suited to you) there are lots of fantastic restaurants, bars and discos located around Lindos. There is a supermarket in Lindos, an internet cafe, a library, a laundrette, florist, post office, doctor, pharmacy, police station, bakery even a travel agency, and lots of shops which sell allsorts including local ceramics, flat woven rugs and also gold and silver jewellery.
Lindos is located around 30 miles south of Rhodes Town and i would say its approximatly a 45 -60 min journey, there are taxis located at the main square, a bus stop and also boats that go to other islands including turkey and also up to falaraki. The taxi's in Rhodes are generally quite fair as there are tarrif boards up so you know what the cost will be before you get a taxi, although i would recommend agreeing on that price with the driver before you get in as it as been known for people to get charged a lot more than they expected although its never happened to me personally. Also i find the best time to visit Rhodes is may/june or sept/oct as the heat isnt so intense it still hits the 30's at times and is generally mid 20's but in the middle of the summer is gets so hot. The holiday season for rhodes as with many greek islands is may to oct but you can still stay out of season but there are no direct flights. That isnt too bad though, all you need to do is get a flight to greece and then fly onto Rhodes from there.
Your probably all falling to sleep trying to read this essay, but as you can tell i have fallen in love with this place but i will end this now by saying go to Lindos you won't regret it.
Summary: I want to spend my life here
