Advantages: Looks Beautiful
Disadvantages: A Bit Steep
Lombard street in San Francisco is one of the attractions you can go to and it is because of the films that this particular street has been shown in. It is a worthwhile street to go and see if you find yourself in San Francisco and here is why.
What is it?
Lombard street is the crookedest street and features in films such as the Herbie film. That is about it really, it is a street but it is so crooked that you would not get down it in anything but a car and even that is extremely tricky.
Location
Lombard street is smack bang in the middle of San Francisco and very easy to find. Our hotel gave us a map for the street and it was clearly signposted there. The thing about San Francisco is that all the streets are very clearly signposted and you can follow a map very easily to find it. The only thing I will say is that if you walk to it like we did, the hills are very steep and it took me ages to get to the top to get to the street. I don't think that you have to go up the hill but it is a gentle warning just in case you do go the same way as us.
You can get public transport to Lombard street via the trams but they will not go down it for obvious reasons. Also on every bus tour there is an optional stop for Lombard street.
The Street
When you approach the first thing you will notice is that it isn't any ordinary street. It has red brick road throughout the street and there are flowers everywhere at the sides and because the street curves so dramatically, the flowers make it look amazing. There are about 7 curves on the street and they are proper hair pin curves so as you can imagine it is a sight to be seen.
The street goes on for what is counted as one block so it is quite tall but you can easily see the top from the bottom. Anybody who knows San Francisco streets will know they go up and down in hills and this street is no different so it is on a very steep hill. You can walk up it though as there are steps to the sides and although they are still steep you can do it ok. There is also a ramp to the side so you can get wheelchairs and pushchairs up there but I can imagine that being quite hard.
You can also walk around the bends as there is a path but I didn't trust the cars coming down. Now as you can imagine because this is a tourist spot there are always cars coming down. They go down very slowly and it looks very hard to do. We didn't do this though, we just walked up but I would have liked to have done it. You wont get any tour buses going down so if you do want to drive down then hire a car.
The street looks amazing and because of the flowers it is really beautiful. If you get to the top there is a brilliant view of San Francisco and its winding roads so get your cameras ready. There are trees to either side and then big buildings that I believe are residential. It is a very famous street so get ready for crowds of people taking photos. We were there for about half hour looking at it, walking up it and taking photos and throughout it is a very busy attraction.
Conclusion
In conclusion I am giving this attraction five stars. It is a must see if you are in San Francisco and because it is free to visit and very easily accessible it is definitely worth going to. Fun to see the cars struggle down it and you will be in awe at just how beautiful this street is. If you don't believe me go and search it on google as it is just fabulous. That is about all I can tell you as it is a street after all but an amazing one.
Thanks for reading.

- 12/11/09 If you stand at the top of the street and look to your left, you get a great view of the Alcatraz island, and if you time it right, a cable car coming towards you up the hill. Postcard shot! |
