The film was Stagecoach, starring John Wayne, and of course, numerous Indians. The Navajo were paid thousands of dollars working as extras and labourers, and business improved for the trading post. Monument valley is on the Utah/Arizona border. It's a familiar landscape after being used so many times in the movies, but even then I wasn't really prepared for how magnificent it was when I visited it as part of a tour of the West. Approaching Monument Valley, we passed through Kayenta and saw handwritten signs at the side of the road that said 'Friendly Indians Ahead'. That meant we were approaching a Navajo trading post, usually just a few tables at the side of the road where the Navajo sell the beautiful silver jewellery the women and their daughters have made during the winter months. I have now been to monument valley 3 times and thought I would share my experiences with you. Our most recent trip was 18 months ago when our children were 6 and 18 months. I hope the review will be useful for anyone planning a trip. Where is it ? *********** Monument valley straddles the boarder of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. It is 175 miles north east of Flagstaff, Arizona. We have always approached it via Kayenta, the nearest town that is about 23 miles south of Monument valley.
