Advantages: Stunning scenery, Light summer nights, Take a camera

Disadvantages: none

Most people from the UK are likely to sample the Mount Ulriken Cable Car as tourists to Bergen having arrived by the Fjord Line (which also delivers tourists from the Continent via their boat sailing from Denmark) which sails to Bergen (via Haugesund and Stavanger) from Newcastle twice weekly in the winter and thrice weekly in the summer. The cable car runs until fairly late at night so it's an option for round trip passengers on the Fjord Line staying on the MS Jupiter overnight in Bergen. The ship gets in at 2100hrs or thereabouts, a ten minute walk down the the quay into Bergen (a GREAT town) and up one of the cobbled streets brings you to the station cut into the mountain side. I'd suggest, on a fine night, taking the cable car (or "furnicular railway" as I believe it's rightly called ...... spelling?) and sampling the unrivalled view over Bergen (and don't forget it doesn't really get that dark in summer Bergen is so far north) and then walking back down and stopping at one of the bars or cafes near the harbour or "bryggen". The cost of a ticket is about £1.20. Norway has a reputation for being expensive. I'd say it's not cheap but it IS good value for money.

The Fjord Line is, in my humble opinion, the best experience available for anyone wanting to sail for pleasure out of the north of the UK to a foreign land. The Norwegians are terrific, the food on board reflects Norwegian chefs' success in the world championships. Entertainment onboard is usually a band comprising between six and nine musicians, high quality piano entertainers in the piano bar, a duo in another restaurant plus regular cabaret artistes. The entertainment onboard is used to entice Norwegians onto the boat who have no reason to travel to Newcastle except for pleasure. The scenery sailing up the coast from Stavanger is mind blowing and I've seen Dolphins off Newcastle jumping out of the water and large flocks of birds following
the boat at migration time and falcons and woodpeckers hitching a ride on the ship.

Hi and welcome to dooyoo, enjoy the site! - It's 'funicular' btw, anyway this is the word on the signs I know from the town of Heidelberg, Germany, which have been put up for the English speaking tourists.
