The Piazza dei Miracoli also known as the Piazza del Duomo is a large area in Pisa that is the main destination for tourists. Bang in the centre but a little distance from the shopping area, the Piazza dei Miracoli is a tourist laden square just within the city walls, it constitutes of about 60% of the main sights of Pisa, so it is no wonder that there are coach parties a plenty here!

Apart from the wall, the numerous market stalls selling tat and the rather wide street brimming with tourists, the square consists of the medieval Cathedral (Duomo) which was started in the late part of the 11th century, it is almost on top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with just a few metres seperating them, this gave the area a bit of a cluttered feel to me and it didn't look particularly well orgnised. The inside of the Cathedral has a very Byzantine feel to it.

The most impressive building for me was the domed roofed Baptistry, like the Duomo it is built in a typical Romanesque style, I liked the intricate detail on the outside of the building, the inside however is quite the opposite and a little bland. As well as this there is the The Camposanto Cemetery which is walled, it is quite intriguing but not particularly exciting - it has been rebuilt in an old style having been bombed in WW2.

Obviously this square is pretty impressive but it is so busy with tourists that it's hard to move without getting in someones photo - I prefer Piazza dei Cavallieri!
