Advantages: Breathtaking views

Disadvantages: A little steep

No visit to Hong Kong would be complete without a trip up the 552-metre high Victoria Peak. Riding the world famous Peak Tram-actually a funicular railway in operation since 1888-along its 1400 metre long route is a truly exhilarating experience which ranks with anything else I've done in my travels around Asia. The lower station of the Tram is located in Garden Road, which is a pleasant walk from Central or Admiralty MTR stations. From the former, walk along Des Voeux Road Central, passing Statue Square(left side) and the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank building (right). The turn into Garden Road is on the right side of Des Voeux opposite Chater Garden and just before the Bank of China building, with the Tram Terminal on the left side of the street near the US Consulate. Operating at fifteen minute intervals from 7am until midnight, tickets for the Tram cost HK$20 for a single journey and for HK$30 for a return. The trip to the upper terminal at Peak Tower takes approximately seven minutes and reaches a maximum gradient of 27 degrees.
Try to get a seat next to the window as there are some great views of the impressive skyscrapers in Central and Mid-Levels on the way up.

Once at the top there are some good viewing points on the upper levels-from which you can get stunning views over the famous harbour, Kowloon and Central on clear days-as well as several souvenir shops and a Movenpick restaurant on the lower floors. I’d also highly recommend the Café Deco Bar and Grill which is located across the road in the Peak Galleria Building. You can get some very reasonably priced Pizzas and Thai Noodles here, affording you great views over Central and a comfortable seat. Just to the left of Peak Tower, in front of the street vendors selling souvenirs on the pavement, there is a nice platform built in the traditional Chinese style which provides another good site for photos.

The air is noticeably cooler at the peak-a fact not lost on the first Euro
pean settlers who quickly set up summer homes in a bit to escape the humidity below-and most visitors take advantage of this fact by making a circuit of one of the walking trails. There is a board in front of the Peak Galleria which details the options, with my personal recommendation being to follow the yellow arrows in the direction of Harlech and Lugard Roads. The walk isn’t too strenuous and you get awesome views of Aberdeen, Lamma and Central.

The Peak Tram-without a single accident in its long history-is the world's safest form of transport. Once at the top you get some of the world's greatest views. Go soon.
