The prison is great fun to explore, and the its just a quick 10-minute boat ride from the Vieux-Port. For 11euros, you can visit ile d'if, and also its neighbouring island Frioul, whose little harbour has some of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Frioul is also a fascinating island to explore, with beautiful turquoise waters and little rocky bays with picturesque views across the water to marseille. Having just returned from a year living in Marseille, I have to say that it is one of the most exciting, interesting and beautiful cities I have ever visited. It's not really like the rest of France. Of course it has its patisseries and the occasional accordian player wandering the streets, but there are so many other cultural influences throughout the city, whose population is made up of people from all over the world, including Italy, Morocco, Greece, Algeria. During my time abroad, I had a number of relatives anf friends come to visit me, and I had no trouble finding things to keep them entertained. There are so many great touristy things to do.
