We were based on Nevsky Prospect where if you're not surrounded by architecturally stunning boutiques, hotels or cafe's, you're having smoke blown in your face by a tattoo sporting Russian mafia member or getting gaped at from head to toe by the haggard looking elderly population. Trams attached to overhead electric cables steam-roller past and screech their brakes in advance of stopping. Out on the street it's a bit wild and definatly edgy. As a first time arrivee, you'd be pressed to feel anything other than lukewarm intimidation at all the noise and dusty pollution. I took Paul to St Petersburg, Russia in November 2003. It was his birthday/Christmas present. It had been a destination we both always fancied, and whilst looking through the Sunday Telegraph travel section, we saw a tour company advertising trips. After looking into that deal and then independent travel, we decided to go it alone!! So we booked our flights out of Heathrow, direct to Pulkovo airport with BA. Traveling from Belfast meant connections but we are well used to that now! Another web search along with the aid of a guide book (TIME OUT ST PETERSBURG) found us our hotel - a reasonably priced local hotel Pulkovoskaya. Also required for trips to Russia ... St Petersburg is a much more European city than, for example, Moscow. It has been described either as where the East meets the West, or as ‘the Venice of the North’. It is a city of many contrasts, with the architecture being a combination of traditional Russian styles, with some European influence too. Despite the poverty of the Russian people, the buildings are absolutely superb. I came here four or five years ago, on a school trip, and I have some fantastic memories of the attractions in St Petersburg that I’d like to share.
