The original name of SanktPiterburh was actually an imitation of the pronunciation of Dutch Sint Petersburg; Peter had lived and studied in the Netherlands for quite some time. The Swedish fortress of Nyenskans and the city Nyen had formerly occupied the site, in the marshlands where the river Neva drains into the Gulf of Finland.

While the suburbs of St. Petersburg remain drenched in poverty and every anti social problem thinkable, the centre is blossoming with new capitalist affluence. Young professionals seem oblivious to a time before Pizza Hut and cafe culture. Or maybe they've chosen ... more

Premium Review Sights & Attractions in St. Petersburg in general: A Luxuriously Aristocratic amalgamation of centuries old mer ... (870 words)

We were based on Nevsky Prospect where if you're not surrounded by architecturally stunning boutiques, hotels or cafe's, you're having smoke blown in your face by a tattoo sporting Russian mafia member or getting gaped at from head to toe by the haggard looking elderly population. Trams attached to overhead electric cables steam-roller past and screech their brakes in advance of stopping. Out on the street it's a bit wild and definatly edgy. Also required for trips to Russia ...  Read the complete review

St Petersburg is a much more European city than, for example, Moscow. It has been described either as where the East meets the West, or as ‘the Venice of the North’. It is a city of many contrasts, with the architecture being a combination of traditional Russian styles, with some European influence too. Despite the poverty of the Russian people, the buildings are absolutely superb. I came here four or five years ago, on a school trip, and I have some fantastic memories of the attractions in St Petersburg that I’d like to share. I intend to write another op in the 'General' category, to cover general travel advice about St Petersburg, ...  Read the complete review
