Advantages: Go there at sunset and get an annual pass for the best deal.

Disadvantages: Too big to see it all.

The Grand Canyon is located in northern Arizona and stretches for 277 miles and has been carved away over millions of years by the Colorado River.

*Cost: when we visited America we purchased an Annual National Parks Pass which enabled us to visit any one of the 100+ parks in America. This was only $80 dollars for a family of four.

*What to do there: there are planes and helicopters available which enable you to get an over view of the whole width and depth of the canyon at some of it's most spectacular points. We took the helicopter ride as this gave a much better view because it can hover and turn on the spot; unlike planes which need to tilt to turn so passengers on one side will miss the view. The helicopter's cost was $149 for adults and $110 for a child.

It is also good to drive along the canyon road which has many scenic view points at the most interesting areas. We finally finished up at the Desert View Watch Tower (pictured above) at sunset; which gives the canyon some spectacular colours as the Sun disappears beyond the horizon.

When you visit the South Rim I recommend you:

*Book a helicopter ride (about 30minutes long)

*Plan to stay all day until sun set.

*Use an annual pass at $80 to visit other parks nearby (Meteor Crater and Monument Valley)
