Uzupis is an independent republic within the state of Lithuania. Well thats not quite true - there is a river and some people living on the other side of it who like to do cool stuff that is outside the realm of normal Lithuanian thought. For this reason alone, I take my hat off to the place.

Uzupis - Uz meaning behind, Upis, meaning river. Yes, you got it dear reader, it is actually behind the river coming from the city side.

Uzupis is close to the old town of Vilnius and has all that cool stuff that the rest of the city wishes it had - talent, creativity, colour, cool pubs, a beautiful stream, farmers markets, concerts, a view over the entire city from the hill and so on.

Generally if you go to Uzupis, you will find people wearing berets - unfortunately this is the lowest common denominator of Uzupis - the people who wear berets and think they are real bohemians will actual ideas in their heads.

Don't let the pretenders throw you off however - there are loads of interesting, people there who hang out in the pub and talk and play music. Tap their brains and get into the ultra creative Lithuania.

You will want to go to Uzupis in the summer for the best experience because it is absolutely brilliant and people just come out in force and do artistic things.

Best plan - go the Uzupis, get drunk, then buy some food from the farmers market, then go to the river and keep drinking while you eat your cheese and preserved cucumbers.
