Advantages: Huge beach, Huge pier, Huge range of attractions
Disadvantages: Car parking very expensive, May be queing a long time at the Pleasure Beach, Make sure you have cash with you before you set out as the banks are miles away from anywhere!
Great Yarmouth is the East Coast's largest resort, boasting 200 acres of golden sandy beaches, miles of seafront entertainment and quality nightlife. The famous illuminations sparkle at night, whilst the (minor) celebrities sparkle in the Summer Season shows.
During the daytime, there are all the ingredients for a fun, family holiday. I suggest you get there as early as possible, to secure a good car parking space as near to the seafront as you can. People have been coming to Great Yarmouth on holiday for years, and as people now increasingly go abroad, it is a shame that many of the old hotels are now boarded up and in disrepair. However, this doesn't deter the day-trippers, parents bringing their children to the beach for perhaps the first time, starting another generation of typical British holidaymakers.
If you are interested in Horse Racing, Great Yarmouth races are very famous; racing has been held here since the 1700's. 17 days of racing are held between May and October each year, so take your pick, consult local press for details!!
Families are actually well catered for, with entertainers on tap to keep the kids amused whilst the adults get on with some serious fluttering. Under 16's are also free of charge. There are more fast food outlets than you can shake a stick at, but also restaurants or cafes for a more formal occassion.
Whilst staying at Great Yarmouth, it's worth checking out a show. The current summer season features the Chuckle Brothers, The Searchers, Joe Pasquale and Jimmy Cricket at the Pavillion Theatre, with many other family entertainment shows taking place at the Gorelston Pavillion Theatre, The Hippodrome Circus, St. George's Theatre and the Wellington Pier Theatre.
Continuing our visit, one of the most exciting attractions and well worth a visit, is the Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach. Apparently one and a half million visitors each year pass through the doors. I think they a
ll go on the day I go - however, the entrance to the site is free, allowing you to pick and choose the rides you want to go on. If you like white knucke rides, the Terminator will be your scene, which spins and turns 360 degrees. However, there is a great mixture of modern and traditional rides, the most well-known, the Roller Coaster.
The town centre boasts all the high street shops and two markets, depending on what days you visit, and a huge Asda which is open 24 hours. It also has the traditional seaside rock-type shops, as well as several lovely fish and chip shops.
If you want a full day out, or fun long weekend, I suggest you take a break and visit Great Yarmouth and remember what a British seaside holiday is truly all about.
