Not just for TV fans (Attractions in Holmfirth)

Advantages: Plenty to enjoy for all ages

If the name Holmfirth rings a faint bell, it's probably because you have heard that it has been used many times as a location for shooting television programmes such as Where the Heart Is and Last of The Summer Wine. However, this is not all there is to know about Holmfirth-there are many things to see and do here and I've listed my favourites below.

Ok, first off, we really can't escape the Last of the Summer Wine thing, it's often the main reason people visit here in the first place. If you wish to see the filming locations, there is a bus tour which will take you around the town and surrounding countryside and show you the lot. At £6 it's not really a bad price for 45 minutes. However, for no money at all, you can take yourself around a couple of the important locations. There is Ivy's cafe, complete with a statue of Compo, just opposite the river. There's also the Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition in Compo's house if you want to see more. You can even have a cuppa in The Wrinkled Stocking tearoom!

Moving on from tv, there are plenty of other things to captivate you here. There are lots of craft shops and gift shops, as you'd expect in a fairly affluent and touristy town. There's a charming little shopping centre where a local artist is often caught working on her latest creation, an many an art gallery/exhibition to boot. There's a craft market each saturday but if you're here any other day the galleries and shops have plenty to choose from. There's also a farmers' market once a month where you can buy local produce.

If you walk alongside the river you will come to a lovely public garden which is often home to a brass band and various folk with picnics relaxing in the sun to this old-time sound.

Theres a very small theatre in the town named Cragrats which puts on all sorts of productions throughout the year.

When we last visited Holmfirth church (opposite Ivy's cafe) was having a booksale and we spent a lovely time wandering the pews rifling through the books and exploring the church, well worth a visit.

Best of all, the short stay car park is, uncharacteristically of a British tourist town, incredibly cheap-40p for an hour, what a bargain.
