      Very helpful

If you are looking for a fun day out for all the family you must try a trip to the Standedge Visitor Centre on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Marsden. (All details at the bottom of my op). I went with my parents and two young nephews on the Saturday of the last Bank Holiday and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our (albeit short) time there. At three and a quarter miles long, Standedge Tunnel is the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain. To reach the tunnel and Visitor Centre you walk along the canal towpath (although canal taxis do operate during peak periods). The Visitor Centre, with wheelchair access, is comprises an interactive exhibition depicting the history of the canal and tunnel, as well as how the tunnel miners and ‘leggers’ worked. For children, there is a special trail - Vinnie the Vole’s ‘Tiny Trail’. You can even try a legging machine, which shows just how hard it must have been for the leggers who had to push the narrow boat through the tunnel before it was modernised to is current height. After the energetic ‘legging’ you will probably be in need of sustenance! The Tunnel Inn Restaurant at the Water’s Edge is the perfect place. Run by the congenial Caroline, it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a pint, an ice-cream or some food. If you fancy some time on the water instead of sitting next to it, guided boat trips are available. They start at the Visitor Centre and travel deep into the Tunnel.
