Located to the North of Swansea and a few miles South-East of Llandeilo on the A483 lies the impressive Carreg Cennen Castle. As you approach the castle from any of a number of roads it stands out like a ‘sore thumb’ perched up on a hilltop. The Castle dominates the surroundings and gives you a good insight as to the fantastic views that you can expect to have once you reach the Castle.

The history of the castle goes back to the 13th Century but there is archaeological evidence that the Romans and the prehistoric people did occupy the craggy hilltop centuries earlier. To get to the hilltop is a fairly steep climb on the easiest face I would have imagined it impossible as part of a marauding horde. The walk most certainly increases the heart rate and the view at the top of the Black Mountains and surrounding areas is breath taking. I have a Digital camera that I can take a number of photos with and stitch them together and make a panoramic view from the castle, which is now framed and takes pride of place in the hall – yes that, good a view.

The Castle is on private farm property and you have to go through the farmyard to access the castle. Hence you are expected to pay but there are good parking facilities and toilets. Also there is a café that has a very good view up of the castle.

There are very good walks around the surrounding area which are very well sign posted and very scenic. One or two areas are quite steep but I have taken the kids on a number of walks and they don’t moan too much.

The remains are what is left after the war of the roses in 1462 but its still fairly obvious that the remains of certain buildings and the twin – towered gatehouse.

The old Welsh stories claim that there is a warrior asleep beneath the castle awaiting a call from the Welsh, after our rugby performance against the English I suggest we call him soon!!
