I would like to say that I have quite a good life at work and at home. At work I have an amazing view of Fyrish Monument, sitting looking out the window is really one of the best sights I've ever seen (well on a sunny day). If you are heading on the A9 past Evanton and Alness you can see Fyrish at the top of the hill but no matter how good it looks from here wait until you walk to it.

A bit about the Monument

The Monument was built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill which is also known as Cnoc Fyrish. It is located on a hill on the outskirts of Evanton in Ross Shire. It was built to give locals work to do as there was unemployment issues within the area. Fyrish Monument, is known as an imitation of the gates of Negapataum in India.

The myth about this which many locals including myself believe that the employer who was Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar would employ people to carry up the boulders to the top of Fyrish hill to build the monuement and because none of the locals would accept extra money for Sir Munro he would then go up at night and roll the boulders back down the hill so he could then pay his staff twice.

The main Fyrish Monument is not the only one you can see though. As far as i'm aware there is another two and they were all to be linked together by a wall which unfortunately was never done. They are a fair bit away and would take you all day for you to get to see all three. The other two monuments are not as big and not visited as much as the main monument. Luckily for me living in the area all my life and especially living in Evanton until I was 21 I have been lucky enough to walk to all three. The middle one was difficult to find and having to us a compass we finally found it of the track and through a large wooded area.

On fantastic days you also have the view of Ben Wyvis, the Affric and Fannich Ranges and the Cromarty Firth.

The Walk to the Top

The land is now owned by Novar Estates and you are able to walk up to the monument from several ways including walking from Evanton which is a bit of a trek. The easiest way to access this is to drive up to Ardross and take the turning to Boath. Near the end of this road is the Fyrish car park which is clearly sign posted.

From here you can then walk up a fairly clear footpath to the top. I will warn you that it's not Mount Everest but it is a fair walk up to the top. The hill stands at 1478 feet high, the walk is a steady climb and just when you think you've reached the top you see another steep part to overcome. It usually takes 2-3 hours to walk up but really worth the walk.

Don't let this put you off though, once you do get to the top you have plenty time to sit and rest. You will then be completely amazed by the spectacular view which overlooks the Cromarty Firth. It really will take your breath away (well if you've managed to get it back after the climb!) :o)

At the top there is plenty space to sit for a picnic and many people have been known to set up a tent for an overnight stay. The sunset and sunrise is more fantastic than words can describe.

it is a very popular walk within the Highlands area. And is always busy throughout the summer. It really is a walk you should go on if you are ever in the area as you definately won't be disappointed once you reach the top. Once you do decided to head home remember it's not so bad as it's downhill all the way. I have been here many times and I am sure in my lifetime I will re-visit it on several occasions.
