03.30am: Leave Essex…yawn:o(
10.00am: Arrive Cornwall :o)
10.10am: Dump luggage in caravan, drive 3 miles down the road to the Cornish market.
10.30am: Sit in car at Cornish Market World car park munching on hot pasties :o) :o)!!

That my dear friends, was the start of a wonderful holiday in Cornwall for me and mine a couple of weeks ago! Here beginneth the second op in the ‘Cornish’ series!

I was amazed to discover that there was already a category for this great place with one solitary little op in it, by the op writer known as nikkisly! May I be permitted to add my little contribution to this category in order to keep nikkisly’s company?

“Here, who said that?” Ah never mind I was going to anyway!

As the title at the top of this op informs, The Cornish Market World is situated at St Austell, somewhere between it and St Blazey. We discovered it quite by accident last year, as I think a lot of the best places are found, on our way to Tescos!

Now I love a bargain me, and the thought of trawling around an indoor market filled me with glee, and my husband’s wallet with dread! But we were on holiday (not that I usually need that excuse to spend!) so we couldn’t pass without giving it the once over.

The market is almost completely under cover. When I say almost I should explain that there are one or two traders outside the actual building, like a fast food vendor, huge cushion and bedding trader and a wonderful little caravan that has delightful home blown glass items for sale. The rest of the stalls are inside what appears to be a huge industrial unit.

There are several entrances and exits into the building so you don’t have to go all the way around all the stalls if you don’t want to, but I defy you not to want to! But they are also quite useful if
you want to nip out for a breather or a quick ‘wee’ break. The loos onsite are clean and tidy.

It is stated that there are over 300 stalls in here, I didn’t count them but I would have to agree that that amount is probably correct.

There is also a children’s play area, which my 14 year old vehemently refused to check out for me, even in spite of me offering to split any profits I make from this op with him! That child has much to learn!

I guess you want to know a bit about what kind of stalls were there, don’t you, otherwise why else would you be reading this op?

Well I have to say the first time we visited here this year we didn’t take too much notice of what was around us. We had built in homing devices that lead us right to the pasty counter that we remembered from last year!

You will be relieved to know that we paid a return visit, (ok yes it WAS to get more pasties), and on this occasion we spent a little more time browsing!

These are some of the stalls in here:

Clothes: Children’s, leisure wear (trackies and the like), lots of women’s clothes stalls. I did check out some great thick cardigans for £7 each or two for £12. I wish I had got a couple for my Nan, but was distracted at the time by the stall below.
(No it wasn’t pasties:o(!!!)

Nik-Nak stall: Well it wasn’t exactly nik naks but it is difficult to know what to describe it as? They had souvenir type items in here as well as some gorgeous clocks. But what really caught my eye was THE coffee table that I have been looking for!

It was only £115, perfect. Well it would have been had my husband agreed to leave one of the motorbikes behind and take that home instead. But when I suggested leaving something behind so that we would have room to take it home he had a strange gleam in his eyes..hhmm?…..

Toys: the usual array of toy stalls of which from
one we bought a very decent set of ‘boules’, complete in sturdy carrying case for only £10, very professional looking they are too!

Bags: Why are rucksacks so cheap these days? They were selling decent ones for £5 for TWO!! My husband said we ought to get a couple just in case. I told him not to be so daft and what would we want two rucksacks for ‘in case’? Guess who has just joined a gym and could really do with one right now?

What do you mean, “WHOs just joined a gym?”

I have of course!! And if you keep on sniggering to yourselves I might have to treat you to an op on that when I get a chance! If I am going to suffer, then you lot will too!!

Fruit: There are the usual array of fruit stalls and the best one is situated right at the other end of the market, assuming that you enter the market by the glass blowing caravan. So why is this the best fruit stall?

Is it because it has the best looking fruit?
The juiciest selection?
Or the best looking and juiciest stall holder?
No on all counts!
It is because it is the nearest fruit stall to the hot pasty counter!!

Other stalls include, haberdashery(just where did that word come from?), linen and bath towels (three for a tenner!), craft stalls, household goods, toiletries, tools and DIY products, jewellery and watches (both me and my son bought a watch each from one such stall for only £10).

Also there are at least two sit-down food and drink areas under cover too, as well as the couple outside in the vast car park.

We have never had any trouble finding somewhere to park when we have visited. But I gathered from nikkislys op that this isn’t always the case? Perhaps we have just been fortunate?

The Cornish Market World is open on Saturdays and Sundays, and indeed Wednesdays (although this might only be the case during the holiday season?) from 9am to 5pm.

I can thoroughly
recommend that you give it a look if you live down that way, although you have most likely already been! Or if you are on holiday down that way you simply must stop here, if only to sample the delicious authentic Cornish pasties! We can highly recommend the cheese and onion ones too!

And if next year you see a Peugeot estate in the car park with a gorgeous coffee table on the roof rack and two demented tourists sitting in it wiping the pastry flakes from their clothes as they sit with contented ‘piggy’ grins on their faces, well that’ll be us!

And you wonder why I have joined a gym!!!
