Advantages: good value, highly informative

Disadvantages: not for children

I never realised that so many of famous poets, novelists and playwrights actually came from Ireland! Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce (Ullyses), Abraham Stoker (Dracula), William Yeats, Jonathan Swift (Gulliver's Travels)... to name but a few. This museum is highly informative and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in literature and Irish culture. In fact, I would recommend it to anyone at all. Situated near the city centre, a visit to the Dublin Writers museum proves to be pleasant. It is only a small museum, which is actually an advantage. After all how much can one possibly learn and retain about Irish literature?

The museum contains two rooms, and holds exhibits from as far back as the tenth century (or perhaps even earlier). Original manuscripts and letters written by and to the writers are featured. The first room spans the main writers from the tenth to nineteenth century, whereas room two focusses only on the last two centuries. This is the best place to learn so much about the lives and times of Irish writers in a very short space of time.

Entrance is cheap, and there is also a gift shop, toilets, cloakroom, public telephone and coffee room in the museum. Staff are friendly and helpful atr both the reception and gift shop.

Overall, it would be worthwhile to take out a couple of hours while you are in Dublin to visit the museum.

(Oh, and I'd also recommend the National Art Gallery for anyone visiting Dublin!)

A very interesting review. Thanks for your comments on my St A's "pubcrawl" option. I graduated with an easy 2.1 with one distinction in spoken language, but would have possibly got a first if I'd not spent so much time getting banned from pubs. Mind you a 2.1 was not bad seeing as my misbehaviour in second year nearly got me booted out of one department! Mike
