Advantages: Fresh air., Free., Good views.

Disadvantages: A bit windy.

The reservoirs in this country used to be locked away behind iron gates and unseen by most of the public, but over the past few years many of these reservoirs have been made accessible to casual visitors.

Foremark Reservoir is within the National Forest near Ticknall in Derbyshire and is a very pleasant place to visit. This reservoir is 230 acres in size, which means it is about four and a half miles all the way around. You can get to the reservoir from the A514, which takes you to the visitor centre.

The facilities at the centre are not very big but are very clean and useful. There is an information room telling you about the reservoir, with a number of free leaflets available giving further information. A small snack bar sells drinks, snacks and ice creams and there are toilets here as well. Near to the visitor centre is a children’s play area with a whole range of play apparatus.

There is a 2 mile woodland walk you can take from the car park and also a whole area around the side of the lake where you can walk along the grass banks. Benches are situated all along the walks where you can sit and look over the lake.

On the opposite side of the lake there is the Burton Sailing Club and you can watch the dingys sailing on the water. You can also contact the club for sailing lessons or joining in their events.

Some of the areas of the lake are also designated as fishing zones, but you need to check the map to find a designated area. There is also a nature reserve at one end of the reservoir and I am sure that the area must be popular with bird watchers.

Like most reservoirs the area is windy, but there are many sheltered spots where you can relax and enjoy the very pleasant view over the water.

If you want to breathe in a good dose of fresh air, or take a picnic to a very pleasant location then I would suggest you make a visit to this reservoir.

I always love seeing your new ops pop up because in every one I have read so far I have recognised a place, person, product or whatever. Very odd! On this occasion:
1. My dad grew up in Burton, and
2. We lived in Derby for a while when I was a kid and every time we left the area for a weekend or whetever, my dad would never admit where we were going, he just used to say 'Guided tour of Ticknell Fog Works' - is this a local joke, or is he just weird??
