Advantages: The atmosphere and history

Disadvantages: The car parking

A dramatically beautiful glen in Wicklow, the garden of Ireland. A holy site for thousands of years, the monastery at the site was founded by St Kevin in the 6th century. The monastery still stands with its quirky buildings and dramatic round tower.

Even on a busy day, when you descend into the valley and the actual site it is incredibly tranquil, it is no surprise that those devoted to God found this a place to pray and worship in.

I visited during this summer and it was very busy, so busy on the first day we turned back faced with nowhere to park. We returned early the next day and were luckier. Thankfully when you enter the actual site the car park madness is erased.

A truly beautiful place which wears its history lightly, there is an visitors centre which you pass through (many displays explain the history of the site) and they assign you a knowledgeable guide to tell the history of the buildings and environment. Surprisingly reasonable entry fee as it is under state care.

Summary: A beautiful serene escape
