Guiness Brewery: ... = Guinness, Guinness= Dublin. You cant separate the two! You're surrounded everywhere you go by advertising, souvenirs and the fact that the brewery covers rather a large area of the city! So a visit to the Guinness Store House is almost obligatory, its rather an imposing building, part of the still working brewery which stills produces 10 million pints of the stuff EVERY DAY and its a massive 7 seven s...

kenjohn Maritime Museum of Ireland
... ~ I’ve lived here in Dublin for over twenty years now, and it was only recently that I discovered that this small museum, the Maritime Museum of Ireland, even existed. I was stuck out in a seaside suburb of Dublin, Dun Loghaire, (where the ferries from Holyhead in Wales arrive) waiting for a fare to the airport in my taxi, and with an hour to kill. So the weather being rather pleasant, (a rare enough occurrence this year!) I parked up and went for a wee wander to take the sea air. ~ ~ The Maritime Museum is located in an old church called (wait for it) the Mariner’s Church, up a small side street called Haigh Terrace, just off the Dun Loghaire main stree...

kenjohn Kilmainham Jail
... ~ It would in all probability never even cross your mind to visit a prison as a “tourist attraction” when visiting a strange city. But if you ever find yourself here in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, then to leave without visiting what is probably one of the most famous prisons in Europe, Kilmainham Gaol, would be a serious omission from your agenda. No other place in the city will give you quite such an insight into why it is the Irish are so proud of their independence, and I guarantee that you wont leave without feeling the full weight of Irish history bearing down on your shoulders. ~ ~ Kilmainham Gaol is situated in the Inchicore area of the city...

In fact, Drimnagh isn’t really a village these days, being only about three miles or so from the City Centre, and is now more just a part of the city itself. ~ ~ The Castle was built in the 13th Century for a family called the Barnewalls, a Norman family who had settled here in Ireland, and who owned vast tracts of land, including all of the area that now consists of the Dublin suburbs of Ballyfermot and Terenure. It was actually lived in right up until 1954, the last residents being a family called the Hatches, who managed and ran a dairy farm in its grounds. In 1954, the Christian Brothers bought the land an...
