Dear dooyoo - community,
Let me quickly introuce myself to you: I am a 28 year old student coming from Germany and I will stay in ngland for the next 6 months in order to improve my language skills and get to know mor about British culture and way of living.
I have some good experience with the German dooyoo - yes, there is one over the Channel, too... but as I want to communicate as much as I can in English I´ll try to write down some of my impressions of Manchester and the products that are new to me. So please be lenient towards any mistake I may make in my reviews.
For my first review I chose a library that I discovered yesterday when I was wandering through the city centre:
*** John Rylands Library ****
You´ll find the library right in the city centre:
150 Deansgate
Manchester M3 3 EH
It´s opening times are:
Sunday / Monday: 12.00 - 5.00
Tueday - Saturday: 10.00 - 5.00
My first imression of the library was that it was an astonishing contrast of the old building combined with some modern parts like the museum shop and the staircase for example.
The library almost looks as a church but it was deliberately built as a library. As it was built in gothic style it is one of those beautiful buildings that make you hold on for a minute and breathe the spirit of the centuries before your time.
Another very positive thing to say is that the museum attendants are very helpful and happy to show you around and they give you the feeling as if you are very welcome.
The John Rylands Library was built in the 1980s and it houses especially old books, manuscripts and archives. Furthermore it showcases some great exhibitions with various topics. I was lucky to see a very interesting exhibition about Darwin and his voyage with the Beagle.
This library is not meant for the general reader or somebody who is looking for the latest bestseller, but after all is is really worth seeing it.
This is mybe the most beautiful libray I´ve ever seen and I can recommend it to everybody interested in literature and great architecture. Plus: Entrance is free!
*** Thank you for reading my reviews! ****

- 27/09/09 I have lived in Manchester on and off for 9 years and never been here - whoops! However I guess I probably saw more bits of Germany than some Germans when I lived there. Hope you're enjoying your time in our city! |
