Advantages: History of Newlyn School, The Wink!
Disadvantages: The cliff top walk....
I still swear the sign post at the start of the cliff walk from Mousehole to Lamorna Cove said two miles. I even had a smirk at two well equipped hikers with backpacks, tough walking shoes and stout sticks as they went striding past us. I felt more than adequately dressed in Jeans, T/Shirt and my fashion trainers!
The smirk was soon on the other side of my face. It was a tough walk. The weather was fine when we started, as all we wanted was a gentle lunchtime amble across the cliffs in Mount's Bay Cornwall, to Lamorna Cove, then the pub nicknamed The Wink! We'd only walked about half a mile when the skys darkened, the wind got up and we realised we were in for it.
I seemed to be right on the edge of the cliff, tilting side ways the whole time. We had to cling on, clamber over rocks, struggle up hills all the time with the weather closing in. It may have been two miles in a straight line! It was more like six miles the way we were managing it.
The heavens opened, and those hikers with their waterproofs and suitable gear didn't seem so funny anymore. The skys fell in on us, we were battered and blown, and arrived at Lamorna Cove two hours later, soaked to the skin and longing for a pint.
As a reward, the sun came out and we saw Lamorna in all it's splendour. It was a base for the Newlyn School of 'fresh air' artists at the beginning of the nineteen hundreds, and is steeped in the history and the impact these 'bohemians' made to this area.
Lamorna is very quiet, uncommercialised, with stunning views over Mounts Bay, has a handful of cottages, art galleries and a couple of tasteful hotels, and of course The Wink, where we fell gratefully into the door for food and drink after our ordeal. We got a taxi back to Mousehole, tired, a little merry, but happy.
If you have an interest in art and are in the Penzance area, then make an effort to visit Lamorna. It's one of those secret pla
ces, but I don't mind sharing it.

- 12/09/00 A cautionary tale to all would be cliff path walkers here, lamorna. It might only be 2 miles on the map but by the time you've gone up and down the gradients ( some 1 in 2) that distance can triple. We often see people setting out along the coast path having booked their nights accommodation a couple of vilaages along, without realising they have maybe an 8 hours strenuous walk ahead of them.I'll certainly check out your special place next time I'm in Penzance - I've not visited it yet and it sounds lovely. |
