So you think you have been to a great bonfire party in your life do you?
WEll you aint seen nothing until you have experienced Lewes Bonfire!
I first went in 1995 after meeting my fiance (she is from Uckfield).
She told me about a famous Bonfire extravaganza called Lewes Bonfire.
I had never heard of the event but I am told its quite famous.
Well, what a treat I had!
Im not one for Bonfires but this whole town gets swept by bonfire fever every year.
Around this small town there are many organised bonfire parties.
There are literally thousands upon thousands of people there!
It all stars about 6:30 in the evening with a parade of the catholics through the town.
This involves a street carnival type atmosphere with a show put on by the local amateur dramatics society showing Popes and Catholics in chairs being carried along the roads of the town.
They are then taken to one of the parties where the popes continue their show, ranting and raving before they are supposedly tossed onto the bonfire!
The first year I went, some idiots were hurling bangers and other fireworks at the popes!
Not a good idea and it made local news.
Obviously you do get the odd fool who brings their own rocket to launch with hundreds of people around but you get that anywhere.
Its a really good evening out for all the family and worth the trip.
Its free to go into these displays and they are all properly organised if not cordoned off very well.
The police do a good job of controlling the traffic as it can get hectic in Lewes at the best of times.
I have never seen one town get so worked up over Guy Faulkes night!

The burning of the Effigies has some historic significance and has even featured on Songs of Praise. It is a mad night though, our band once did the carnival, unfortunately it scared the crap out of half of them as you get bangers thrown at you as you go down the street. We never returned!
