Looking back and feeling nostalgic….. When the Dome was built you think it something a bit extra-terrestrial it was like a UFO shape but once completed it looked good, certainly it was catchy and it had all the potential to be very good. It became a tourist attraction and you had to visit it because it was only here for a year. Although, you couldn’t drive directly to it, the routes were set up and it was to get there by transport provided. I can remember standing outside the Dome and being thrown away by the size, I was like a little kid waiting for my candy stick and I was genuinely very excited as I went in. There was a lot of controversy over the way the lottery money was spent, should we have built something more permanent, something in the middle? But, after visiting it I am glad that Britain did mark the Millennium with some sought of structure, it’s a pity it wasn’t lasting. The Dome was made up for zones, so you could have a ‘rest zone’ where you could have a little rest and listen to some soothing music whilst you sit back and take it in. The ‘work zone’ was very good but I did notice that it was abit logo dominated but nevertheless it was quite impressive. As we're not particularly religious we only gave the "Faith Zone" the most cursory of glances, it looked like everybody else had the same idea as this Zone was practically empty when we wandered through! We had looked forward to taking our daughter to the Learning zone and we weren’t disappointed, it was very educational and although m daughter couldn’t understand that much I could see that it was very helpful nevertheless. There was even a little film you could watch which was aimed at young children, and I can remember hearing a few ahhhhh’s. The ‘play zone’ was very good but aimed at slightly holder children to my daughter but we had a goo
d walk about anyway. The ‘Mind zone’ was a good zone, full with brain teaser and games you could play. The much talked about ‘Body zone’ was very good, it was like you were inside a human’s body and their organs, the heart pumping was a good idea, very educational and I am sure a good science lesson could have been taught here. The souvenir shop was very good and we bought a few good items as memorabilia. The day was well spent, at times I felt bored and it was aimed much more at a school audience that audience. I would have kept it, because I am sure children would have visited it as part of their schooling, it could have become a centrepiece of Europe for Education, with zones full of knowledge and fun. It just seems to be waste knocking everything down…… I am glad I went atleast I can say I did visit the Dome in years to come.

- 10/03/01 As I live in Cornwall I never got round to seeing the Dome (other than from above in a plane). I'm sorry that I missed it now and feel I should have made more of an effort. Nice op. |
