Advantages: a groovy building I suppose
Disadvantages: footache, backache, headache, wallet-ache
If they had asked me first, before all this dome malarkey last year, i'd have told them to use private investment and make a rather fantastic theme park to entertain some of London's many tourists. Instead, they used taxpayer's money and so felt morally obliged to make the domr 'educational' and to be honest, who goes for a fun day out to learn???? Okay, so it looks pretty groovy, but hey, so does the London eye, and you don't have to learn anything there, do you? For me, the dome was just an excuse to sell you stuff. Behind all the glossy displays is just another marketing message... Marconi, Ford, Boots etc. The dome itself tries to sell you the useual tourist rubbish like a particularly attractive dome pen or dome chocolate blah, blah, blah. By lunch time I was absolutely shattered, having wandered round aimlessly in queses for the entire morning looking at one pointless statement emblazened across the wall, then moving about a metre, and looking at another one. joy. The good bits of the dome in my view are... the relax zone (this is v. mellow and completely different to the rest of the place), the blackadder movie (not only because it is a chance to rest your feet for half an hour) and the national portrait where poeple have nominated icons of britishness.... oh and I suppose the show (if that's your cuppa tea). Thankfully, i got my tickets free.... cos i would have been thoroughly gutted if I'd paid £20.

- 22/12/00 We went and we loved it. Too big to see it all in one day, and now it's nearly over! I thought the Journey area, sponsored by Ford, was the best, but it still wouldn't persuade me to buy a Ford! |
