Advantages: Free entry, full of local interest, well laid-out

Disadvantages: Needs a long time!

I recently visited Andover museum for only the second time, even though I've lived in Andover most of my life.

"This will take about an hour," I thought. Two-and-a-half hours later, I came out again!

The museum is known as "The Museum of the Iron Age" but it's really the story of Andover and the surrounding area from the Stone Age almost up to the present day.


A large part of the museum is taken up with exibits from the excavation of the nearby Danebury Hillfort and thus, many of the artefacts date from Roman times.

However, I was particularly interested in more recent history, especially the story of the notorious Andover workhouse, and the history of commerce and the railway in the town.

I learned many things I didn't know before, for example; Andover once had its own canal.

The museum also contains a reconstructed Victorian drawing room, complete with waxworks of a distinguished Victorian family, plus a reconstructed general store.

There is a small video theatre and, just when you think you've seen everything, there is an aquarium containing fish from the local chalk streams.

In summary, this is a fascinating place to visit, for locals and visitors alike.
