While spending a few days on the Gower at Oxwich Beach, we came across a sign for Oxwich Castle. After climbing a not too steep hill for about half a mile, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the castle was really interesting. Although standing on the site of an earlier fortification , the castle is really a grand Tudor mansion house built by Sir Rice Mansel in 1520-30. It stands in a clearing next to woodlands and looks out over the bay. Lots of the 16th C walls and windows are standing and many rooms can still be seen.
