Oxwich Castle (Oxwich castle)

Advantages: historically interesting, naturally beautiful, peaceful Disadvantages: none
While spending a few days on the Gower at Oxwich Beach, we came across a sign for Oxwich Castle. After climbing a not too steep hill for about half a mile, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the castle was really interesting. Although standing on the site of an earlier fortification , the castle is really a grand Tudor mansion house built by Sir Rice Mansel in 1520-30. It stands in a clearing next to woodlands and looks out over the bay. Lots of the 16th C walls and windows are standing and many rooms can still be seen. We spent at least 2 hours exploring and discussing the functions of the rooms and various architectural features such as fireplaces dooorways and windows. One tower still has 6 storeys .One part of the castle has been lived in continuously until quite recently, and it is here that the fascinating story of the area is displayed, from pre-historic times to the present day. This is just one of the very many castles on the Gower. It is well worth a visit and the admission is only £2.00. Summary: |
