Paper Mill Lock is a lovely canal system located in Little Baddow which is approximately 7 miles from Chelmsford town centre. It is a haven for walkers with its picturesque views of the woods and canal system. opening times vary depending on the time of year but even during the cold winter months its open from 10 am. It has free admission & there is plenty of free parking at the carpark with coaches also welcome. You can take an hour long cruise along the beautiful canal or hire a row boat or open canoe and explore the canal yourself. In the later years of my childhood I lived in a small village called Little Baddow, which is only a few miles from Chelmsford in Essex. The village is a stark contrast to the suburban outskirts of the town, and most of the village is located along a hill, which if you follow it from the top leads to the quiet and picturesque Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. It is unspoilt, and the area around the lock at the bottom of the hill is particularly beautiful. The canal here is speckled with brightly coloured boats, and the towpath walk which hugs the waterway will take you as far as you want to go - right to Maldon and left to Chelmsford. You will absolutely not run out of things to do! Excellent value for money, cheaper attraction tickets which allow you to queue jump.
The ticket is extremely flimsy, keep it safe! Also, not enough time to do everything.
