Rudyard Lake over the years has become one of my favourite places to go if I am looking to go out for a picnic or a fairly chilled out day. I discovered Rudyard only a couple of years ago even though it is located very close to where I live and only 20 minutes drive away. I had heard people talking of it, however never ventured out to take a look for myself, having been there quite a few times, it is really a worthwhile place to visit for a tranquil setting.
Rudyard Lake is situated near Leek, Staffordshire. Following the winding roads through the Staffordshire Moorlands, you will come straight to Rudyard Hotel, a very nice hotel, quite cosy and nice to sit outside and have a drink before you venture out to the lake. Its very old fashioned and to be honest I have never really seen many people in there, however I don't think that many people are actually aware that there is a hotel there. It would be a really great place to go if you were looking to go somewhereb for a romantic night out and a little bit of piece and quiet.
Rudyard Lake itself is five minutes walk from the hotel. The Lake is two and a half miles long and as soon as you get to it the front is opened up and you can see straight down the middle of it. For people that are wanting to take a look around the lake, there is a small train that does trips around the Lake every half an hour, which is extremely pleasant if you have kids and will keep them entertained as there isn't really a great deal for kids to do if parents are sitting around and sunbathing. However for adults its quite nice to take a walk along the tow path at the side of the lake or alternatively if you are looking for something a little bit more adventurous, you can go around the other side of the lake, which is a lot more uphill and more for people that like rambling.
There is a small tea shop at Rudyard Lake that serves sandwiches, cakes and various types of beverages which is always a hit with the old dears that want to sit around by the Lake with a cup of tea and a scone. There is plenty of seating area around the shop. At the end of the Lake there is a big grass area, which is it is a nice day, its always nice to take a towel and go a spot of sunbathing as it gets like a sun trap in this particular area.
Rudyard Lake is great if you have pets too. There is an area that is shallow and if you dog likes a little swim, its easily accessible for the dog to gain entry and get back out again and the water is extrememly clean so you don't have to worry about it being contaminated or anything or the dog getting dirty.
There are other activities that can be done on the Lake, Canoeing is available at a cost and also sailing. If you have your own boat, mooring can be also arranged on the Lake. Boats can be hired if you are competent in one, however on bank holidays they do offer boat rides across the Lake which normally cost around £5 per person.
For the keen fisherman, with a valid licence, day passes are available for you to sit on the bank side and spend the day fishing. Rudyard used to be the main place up North for angling matches.
For a peaceful and pleasant day out, Rudyard Lake is a really nice palce to visit. Take a picnic and soak up the sun, and I can assure you, you will enjoy the breathtaking sights of the Lake itself.
