Advantages: Interesting and Educational
Disadvantages: None
Hello we visited the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary recently and it made for an informative, interesting few hours out.
The Owl Sanctuary relies on donations to keep going and entry is on a donation basis. However they do have a suggested price list which is as follows:-
Adult:- £6.50
Seniors:- £5
Child 4-14:- £4
Under 4's:- Free
Family Group:- £20 (up to 5 people)
I found these prices to be fair enough value for money as we purchased a family ticket for 4 adults at the suggested price. There is a Gift Shop here selling everything you would expect. It's not as extortionate as some gift shops i've been in either with a small teddy being priced at £2.99 and a bottle of drink (Coca Cola etc) for £1.
There are over 60 birds of prey here from Eagles, and Snow Owls to Buzzards, and Falcons. Not all the birds are caged some are just tethered in a shaded enclosure which makes for some good photo oppurtunities. An Owl Nursery is sectioned off for baby owls which were amusing to stand and watch.
There are also chipmunks, red squirrels a woodland walk with a bird hide and a picnic area. There is however a very fairly priced cafe offering a large fried breakfast for £3.80. There is also a campsite near-by.
The centre opens at 10am and the flying displays were at 12.30pm and 2.30pm on the Sunday we visited. The birds we saw at the flying display were an Eagle, Buzzard, Tawny Owl, Falcon and Kestrel. The displays were interesting with the bird handlers giving infomation as they flew the birds.
The birds are flew directly in front of you and above your heads getting very very close at times.
It is easy to find the Owl Sanctuary as it is sign-posted from the main dual carriageway (A14) and is known as Stonham Barns, in a village called Stonham Aspal.
Overall good value for money but wouldn't say this was a full day out but still definately worth a visit.
Summary: Great Place doing a Great Job

- 10/07/09 Nice review. Went once when two younger trainers were discussing the owner who was flying a little owl at the time. They were out of sight but they still had their mikes on. Priceless. |
