Advantages: Art, comfy chairs, free entry - what more do you want!

The Victoria Art Gallery is a small, but wonderful, art gallery near Poulteney Bridge in Bath. It is very near to the centre of town so there is no excuse not to visit if you're ever in Bath. I love this gallery because of it's size as you can leisurely stroll round and enjoy the paintings. The gallery is also fairly quiet so you can settle yourself down on it's lovely padded seats and soak up the atmosphere (and people watch!).
The top floor houses the permanent collection. I don't know that much about art, but I think it is an impressive selection. My favourite painting (I'm afraid to say) is called The Bride of Death and features a husband kneeling by the bed of his dead bride. It is painted so skilfully that you almost think you could reach out and stroke the bed sheets. The bottom floor houses the temporary exhibitions as well as the small gift shop. I have visited about five of the temporary exhibitions and have enjoyed each one. They often feature works you can buy (not always a good thing if you are easily tempted!). Works by local artists are often displayed as well as more 'interactive' exhibits and sculptures.
The Victoria Art Gallery really is a must see if you like mooching around art galleries. Check out their comprehensive web site at http://www.victoriagal.org.uk/ - you can even see the paintings from the permanent collection in the online gallery.
