Advantages: Free, Relaxing, Easy Access
Disadvantages: None
Wandsworth Common doesn't have much to offer - that's what makes it so great. There's no gimmicks. You won't find a Zoo here, nor a Hot-Dog Van or Cafe. Looking for Crazy Golf? Then go somewhere else. Wandsworth Common is an expanse of 'greenness' in a bustling urban area. There is easy access here, with regular buses from Tooting, Battersea, Clapham, Wandsworth Town and Streatham. There is also a rail station over the road. Being only 3 stations and about 15 minutes from Victoria Station, you could even escape here if you had a long lunch break. Parking is limited, but you should find a free place on the Wandsworth Town site of the common. (Look on your A-Z for Nicosia Road and roads surrounding that - they are free). So, what is there to do here? Well, there is a small children's play area tucked away in one corner. Apart from that, you can just take a walk. It is truely relaxing to amble along, smelling the slightly cleaner air. There are various ponds, with ducks and geese - you can take along some bread and feed them. There are also ample benches if you just want to sit and read or think. There's plenty of open grass space and it is ideal for groups of friends, or families to pay frisbee, cricket or football. You'll never run out of space, there's plenty of room for everyone. But, you've done all that and now you're thirsty and hungry, and I've told you there isn't a cafe. Well, all along one side of the perimeter road, by the rail station, are shops, bars and cafes. Not inside the Common, but close enough. When the weather is good, many people purchase alcohol from one of the off-licensces and sit on the grass relaxing and chatting with friends. That is essentially what this place is - a chill-out zone. Best of all, it's totally free.

- 10/09/01 Ha, I know it! I'm from Germany, but had friends in Frewin Rd. Unfortunately they've moved to the Isle of Wight, good for them, but bad for me when I'm in London. Surrey Tavern, yes, indeedy! Malu |

- 26/06/01 Good idea . I've got several near me in Woolwich . Perhaps you could make your opinion a little longer (as I'm trying to do with mine ) , to get nearer a Crown and Premier opinion and get higher readerships . |

- 22/06/01 I know it well as I was born and raised living between Wandsworth and Clapham Commons a ten minuet walk to either. At least Clapham common has the Windmill Pub and a cafeteria near the Bandstand but as you say Wandsworth is nice and peaceful and the have made the wooded area opposite the Surrey Tavern very pretty with wild bluebells and daffodils everywhere. |
