Advantages: Lots of historic artifacts, Very thought provoking
Disadvantages: Some of it is a bit tacky, Admission is quite expensive
Going through the turnstiles having just bought my ticket which cost quite a bit, I was almost hoping that it'd be a rip-off, though as it turned out the rather high ticket price is well worth it. Of all the attractions the ones I enjoyed the most were the fish pond, the battlements, the dungeon and what I referred to as "Lord Snooty's house" - the large house populated with waxworks of King George the something, the young Winston Churchill, chamber maids, butlers and an assortment of aristocrats. It's very big, and I found the bad taste of the era (late Victorian) displayed all over the place to be highly entertaining, unlike the bad taste of the Tussauds Group who in my mind have totally ruined the supposedly haunted tower by furnishing it with cheap special effects and voice-overs form hidden speakers, unlike the dungeon which was a very tragic, quite place which was very small, damp and dark (though of course it is illuminated), with lots of desperate crosses carved in to the wall and with a little hole with some iron bars over where they actually put someone all that time ago. It is fortunate that the owners have neglected to deface this part of the attraction as they have others. The walk over the battlements is very good too as is the garden including a fishpond and a pair of subterranean ice-wells. I went in Winter so I suppose I've missed out on the garden though I could have spent the whole day watching the fish without even entering the castle! There are also demonstrations for children about medieval warfare, a collection of swords and cannon shot, torture equipment and an old book which I think I recognised as a Foxe's Book of Martyrs though this was not at all labelled. I would advise arriving as early as possible and spending a whole day there, which I regret not doing, though I was in the area for something else. Warwick castle is a good way to spend the day and I strongly recomend it, there's someone for everyone, i
ncluding children though you need to have a good degree of mobility to enjoy the battlements. And don't be put off by its glossy adverts.
