We recently visited the Lake District on holiday and were camped around half hour from Windermere. Based upon research on the internet before we left we knew that the Lake Cruises would be a service we would be using.

The Lake Cruises leave at 3 points on Windermere, Lakeside, Bowness and Ambleside. The ticket for your journey on the steamer alone can appear to be rather expensive. However the Cruise can be combined with the Lakeside freshwater Aquarium, the Steam Railway, and other attractions making it far better value for money.

Prices range from around £6 - £10 return depending where abouts you set off from and wish to go. Prices for all day passes are £16 for adults £8 for children or £44 for a family ticket. We combined a Steam Boat ride with the Aquarium and Railway which cost us £20.50 per adult. All well behaved dogs are allowed on all services.

I would say this is a great way to explore Lake Windermere and its surroundings and whether or not you chose any of the extras that are around this will make for a full packed day out.

The steamers themselves are huge and very comfortably accomodate a large amount of people. There is a bar and toilets on each steamer and due to the size you feel virtually no movement from being on the water. Be warned however cover is limited and these trips can be very cold and windy once out in the middle of Windermere.

Overall this makes for a brilliant relaxed day with most of it being spent on the water due to the slow nature of the steamers.
