Advantages: Beautiful, quiet, food, easy skiing
Disadvantages: might not be demanding for hard-core skiers
A beautiful, small French resort that has escaped the worst ravages of mass ski tourism, La Clusaz is a short drive from Geneva. I went there for Christmas and had a the perfect white, festive wonderland experience.
The good points:
The town is charming with a lively local produce market and lots of patisserie - boulangerie distractions.
You can ski right into the Market place in the centre of town! In fact, Pere Noel (Father Christmas to you and me) skied into town by torchlight, throwing presents to the children. There was also a Winter parade with scary ice figures on stilts.
It's very French with lots of French families. So not many Brits, but lots of catering for the French, i.e. excellent savoyard food.
The scenery is beautiful with fantastic views over to Mont Blanc from the top.
Minor bad points:
Skiing may not as extensive as other resorts, but enough to keep me amused for a week as a bumbling intermediate.
Night Life was fairly quiet at Xmas - I understand it livens up in the new year.
Other good things,
A day trip to Anency is easy by bus and a great day off from the skiing to do shopping and sightseeing in a beautiful medieaval town surrounded by canals.
So, if you are a hardcore skier or boarder who wants hundreds of kilometers of red and black runs with equally dangerous apre ski - then this resort is not for you. If, however, you want an authentic French atmosphere with good food and wine and beautful surroundings with a good dollop of skiing thrown in then go for it.
