Lapland in generalNewest Review: ... there are also places with cheaper, less appealing stuff. However, with the Euro exchange rate placed as it currently is, it's not really a place to go to go shopping. The ski school, based in a brand new, well laid out, building, was excellent. We were in small, ability based groups and the instructors were friendly and helpful, with exceedingly good levels of English. In 2007 our ... more |

Yllas, up in the Arctic Circle, offers a perfect winter getaway for families. Our family have now been there twice, and would happily go there every year for ever - if the household budget allowed. We chose it for a skiing holiday as we had been to Lapland before, and knew that it was beautiful, but none of us had skied, so we were looking for slopes that weren't too taxing, good quality tuition, and a range of other activities, without a noisy or disruptive nightlife. Yllas far exceeded our expectations, a pleasant small town, with a supermarket, post office, a few restaurants (Julli's pizzas are superb) and some good quality craft and souvenir shops ... We went to a place called Yllas in Lapland in March 2008 for a week. My partner loves to ski and as I had never tried it before, we wanted to go somewhere we he could ski but where there were plenty of other fun activities to try if I didn't like skiing (and it's a good job we did, because guess what, I don't like skiing!). Lapland had everything we were looking for, lots of things to do, skiing, beautiful scenery and wildlife and cute log cabins. We flew from Manchester and the flight wasn't very long, only about 3 hours. As soon as we hit the runway in Lapland, my breath was absolutely taken away. There was about 2ft of snow covering the ground and all of ... Read the complete review

It wasn't my idea to go to Lapland. Trust me, there are a hundred places I'd rather have been to. It was my grandmother's idea; she had been left some money by a relative, and Lapland was a place she had visited as a child. Realising my little brother would only believe in Father Christmas for another year or so, she and my grandfather decided to take us all to Lapland. This was all about five years ago, but I saw something about it on the telly recently that reminded me about it, so I thought I'd write it up so all you lot know. Lapland is the kind of place you know all about when you're a little kid, and then once you hit adolescence you forget all about it. ... Read the complete review

Went on the one day lapland extravangza with my husband and 3 children on Dec 9th 2007. What a rip off! Canterbury travel are making easy money. They put no effort into these tours what so ever. The snow is the only good thing. Santa was a rush job, the presents were pound shop. The Lunch venue is so small that our party of 5 had to sit apart. One snowmobile between the whole plane of children. No interaction from any of these so called 'Santa's special elves". Staff at Canterbury are so rude to deal with when telling them of ur complaints. Please don't be fooled by them when they justify their higher costs by saying they are better than other tour operators. They ... Read the complete review

Lapland is a vast area of land covering Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The indigenous people are the Saami people. Nowadays, Lapland is controlled by the Saami Parliament. Although they deal with issues in Lapland, they are still answerable and under their National Government's control. (Sort of like the Scottish Parliament) The area of Lapland I am focusing on in this review is the Kiruna area, and in particular - The Icehotel. I have chosen to share my knowledge on this area as it is easily accessible from the UK. The Icehotel is located in a village called Jukkasjarvi, near the town of Kiruna, 110 miles north of the Arctic Circle. ... Read the complete review
