I was lucky enough to win a family day trip to Lapland a couple of years ago, and what a place.
After a very early start we arrived in Finnish Lapland about 10 am it was December so the part of the country we were in was in perpetual twilight at that time of year.
The scenery is breath taking and everything is covered in pure white snow. Lapland is a magical destination to take the children if you are looking for a very special Christmas treat. You can take a ride on a reindeer sleigh or go for a bit more adventure and try out a snow mobile, the choice is yours. We found it best to go on an organised visit then activities are set out for you so you get to see a little more then i expect you would if you just did your own thing. Santa Clause village is magical with the twinkling lights and the line that marks the edge of the Arctic circle. With the trip we were on you got to spend 2 hours shopping and looking around Santa Clause village, you can even visit Santa in his house.
We also visited a frozen lake and took part in all sorts of activities, from a traditional Lap ceremony to bring good luck, a reindeer slegh ride and snow mobiling. They even have a mini snow mobile for the younger children.
We did find the take off and landing at the airport in Finland a bit hair raising as the runway is covered in snow and ice but apart from that it was a fantastic trip.
The children were exhausted by the time we returned to Gatwick but they had a fantastic time. It is one they will remember forever.
The trip is not suitable for children aged 2 or younger due to the temperature. Luckily it was only -4 when we were there, but we were told that it was particularly mild that day. It can sometimes get extrememly cold as low as -20 or lower, so you do have to wrap up warm and hats, scarves and gloves are essential to keep the cold out.

Well done on the crown! A very interesting review of somewhere I really want to go to. My Godmother came from Swedish part of Lapland, so I'll be heading off in that direction though!
