Advantages: Warm and cosy, delightful staff, clean and spacious.

We visited Lienz over the New Year and stayed at the delightful Goldener Stern in the town center. The hotel is over 600 years old and full of character. Despite it being minus 15oC outside it was always cosy and warm inside and that includes the hospitality as well. The staff were always friendly with a smile on their faces and helpful and polite. Helene worked so hard but always had time for a chat.

Our spacious rooms were clean and comfortable with views over the river. Breakfast was delicious, with the usual hams and cheeses, cereal, fruit juice, cakes and pastries and a large selection of fresh bread. Eggs could be ordered and the coffee was great. Each morning the days weather forecast and skiing conditions were available too.

Prices of the rooms start from Euro60 a night bed and breakfast but half board may also be provided.

Despite being in the town center and very convenient for shopping and the ski lifts, the thick walls made the hotel room extreamely quiet and we slept so well at night. There is a ski room where you can keep your skies and even a book rack next to the radiator!

The surroundings were stunning - can recommend the many sledge runs nearby and a visit to Tristachersee to walk on the frozen lake among trees thick with frost.

Summary: For a relaxing, convenient and welcoming place to stay in the heart of Lienz.
