Advantages: snow making, accomidations, variety of trails
Disadvantages: expensive
Sunday River is a wonderful ski resort located in Maine, on the east coast of the United States. I say it is the best on the east coast as it is the west, the rocky mountains, colorado, etc, that have the reputation for great U.S. skiing. Sunday River may not be quite on par with west coast skiing, or with some glorious locations outside the U.S. But it does deserve some recognition.
I grew up skiing Sunday River. I've always had a good experience with their snowmaking (even have been up skiing as early as thanksgiving) and their variety of trails. If you're in the area and happen to stop by, I recommend the following trails: Monday Morning, Downdraft, American Express and Risky Bussiness. They are all intermediate to expert in level. For beginners who want to challenge themselves after a good morning, I recommend Dream maker or Moonstruck. For an extra special challenge, try out OZ, Sunday River's version of glade skiing. (best after a fresh snow fall.)
I've been to this mountain with advanced and beginner skiers alike. There really is a trail, several in fact, for everyone. It also has some beautifully long runs, at least for East coast standards. And it is large enough over all to handle the large volume of skiiers and thus the trails are never too skiied off.
Finally, it is a lovely overall experience as there are some excellent restaurants and comfortable lodging options close by. I would recommend the summit hotel for its ski in, ski out access and its outdoor pool and hot tub although i would advise you to have dinner elsewhere.
Summary: Wonderful mountain, well worth a visit!
