Tignes, along with Val D'isere makes up the Espace Killy Ski Area in the Savoie region of France. Because of its high altidude, 2100m, Tignes is almost guaranteed snow. Split into two main centres, Val Claret (mainly appartment blocks) and Le Lac (more chalets), Tignes comprises a vast ski area for the more advanced skiier. Along with Val D'isere, there are basically 5 valleys, ranging from L'Aguile Pierce on the tignes side to La Fornet on the Val side, the best of which is arguably the far right on the piste map, L'aguile Pierce, where there are two main black runs, the Sache and the Silene, both can be quite a challenge when moguly, the Sache especially, because of ... Tignes - 2100m - that's a long way up, higher tham most other places in the Alps including neighbouring Val d'Isere. This far up trees are non-existent and things can look a bit bleak - but who cares! you don't go all the the way to Tignes to look at trees - you go to ski (well some people go to drink too, but not me) and this high up you can be pretty sure if there is snow in the alps you will find it here. Tignes itself as a collection of villages in a high valley just across the mountain from Val d'Isere with which it shares it's ski area. A couple of villages (Les Boisses and les Brevieres) can be found lower down but the main action ... Read the complete review

I went to Tignes this Christmas 22nd December until the 29th and in terms of skiing it was the best place i had ever skiied. It was absolutely superb. Tignes probably has one of the ugliest villages around. However, its high base (2000m) and its location in one of the best natural snow basins in the French Alps makes it a snowsure resort right through until the end of April. Skiing is fantastic, especially if you ski off-piste where fresh tracks can be left on different slopes everyday for weeks. Beginners and intermediates can also enjoy the huge area linked up with Val d'isere. Both Val and Tignes have glacier skiing for much of the year. Tignes ... Read the complete review

Tignes is a large resort located in the central alps and is joined to Val d'isere. It has one of the biggest and most modern lift systems in the world being capable of getting 100,000 people up the mountain per hour and you should never have to wait more than 10 mins for a lift, even in high season. Tignes has 300KM of piste and a fantastic snow record, the glacier at over 3000M provides garanteed skiing 365 days/year. Tignes has a finicular railway cut into the rock to get people to the base of the glacier, it also has 3 express 6 person chairlifts, a cable car and numerous smaller lifts from the village. The pistes are always well groomed and there is some ... Read the complete review

All you seem to hear about Tignes is that its very ugly! My opinion is that you should be out on the slopes anyway and not mincing around the resort village. OK, its not a pretty Dorset village but it really isnt all that bad. Its a compact resort, with everything you could really need. Easy lift and slope access and free buses between the two villages Val Claret and Le Lac. Not much of a night life really, but drinking in is much cheaper. Superb snow conditions, even in January when I went. Loads of lifts, snow board park and more off piste than you can shake a stick at. Val D'Isere is reachable via piste and lift ...
