Advantages: Cheap, all purpose product, better than most
Disadvantages: Can still cause flare-ups
My husband has a form of excema around his eyes and nose which he has been told is due to years working in the printing machinery trade and all the strong substances involved.
His doctor recommended aqueous cream a couple of years ago. You can buy a 500g tub from Boots pharmacy counter at just under £4.00. A smaller, toothpaste sized tube is also available but is not as good value for money.
The doctor recommended the cream be applied very liberally, which is ok when you are in the comfort of your own home, but as it takes a while to settle in, you need to remember to apply it some time before you go out - although it does cause some amusement from passers by if you don't! My husband has had so much trouble with his skin he is past caring!
The emollient cream can be used as a moisturiser, in the bath and as a cleanser.
My husband finds it great to use in the shower and for washing as his facial skin cannot tolerate anything else at all soap or shower gel wise.
As for moisturising, generally it is quite good. HOWEVER, when his skin is at its worse it actually aggravates it to the stage where it is painful for him. As a result of this he has recently started using coconut oil instead which, as it is a 100% natural product, is gentler on the skin.
He continues to be totally happy with the aqueous cream for washing though.
We always buy the Boots brand - we once purchased a Lloyds Chemist own brand but he could not tollerate this on his skin, so it obviously had different ingredients. The Boots brand contains:
Liquid Paraffin
White Soft Paraffin
Purified Water
Emulsifying Wax (containing cetostearyl alcohol, sodium laurilsulfate)
chlorocresol
ADDED BONUS!
I have found this to be a great cream for shaving my legs! I used to find that all purpose made gels etc for shaving left my skin parched and irritated, but this is lovely, leaves a smooth finish and moisturises at the same time. It is so much cheaper than shaving gels too.
DISADVANTAGES
The huge tub makes it difficult to take away but I decant it into smaller containers to last our stay away.
The smell of this cream is a bit like vaseline, so not over pleasant, but it is only very faint.
Although this is a fantastic product which is gentler on the skin than all other products we have tried for troubled skin, as my husband found it can still cause a reaction. At £4 for a bucket full it is certainly worth a try though.
Summary: At the price, definitely worth a go!
