Advantages: Cheap, contains tea tree and witch hazel, easily available
Disadvantages: You use twice as much, drying, not very effective
We went away for the weekend a while ago and although I am usually excellent at packing, on this occasion I left out two things I cannot live without, cleanser (as in face wash) and makeup remover. I decided the best thing to do was to buy some more but as the place we were in didn't have a Body Shop anywhere nearby I decided to just buy some cheap stuff to see me through the next few days and if it was good then it would be a bonus and if it was utter rubbish then I hadn't wasted all that much cash on finding out.
We popped along to a local Asda and I inspected the beauty product shelves at what was on offer to me. I decided to opt for their own range of cheap products and at £1.97 it was really cheap for a 200 ml bottle of cleansing lotion. Cleansing lotion is what I tend to go for as a makeup remover.
I always pick fluid products over cream based ones as I just feel like I am adding oils to my face when I use cream ones.
The no nonsense packaging cuts down on the cost so I am all in favour of that. It is a blue transparent liquid in a clear plastic bottle with a green plastic flip top lid. The information on the front and back of the bottle is on clear labels stuck onto the plastic.
The front is very simple, the name is clearly shown with the rest of the information slightly smaller than I would say is practical. It says that it contains tea tree and witch hazel next to its name and under it there is extremely small writing saying
"helps prevent spots
contains antibacterial ingredients
leaves skin feeling clean and fresh"
The back of the bottle is the main source of information saying;
Deep Cleansing Lotion
About this product
- Effective daily cleansing to help prevent spots
- Contains antibacterial ingredients to penetrate into the skin
- Removes dead skin cells, dirt and oil
- Helps unclog pores
- Leaves skin feeling clean toned & refreshed
- Suitable for all skin types
How to use
Use morning and night after washing. Apply lotion to cotton wool and gently cleanse the face and neck.
There is also a full list of ingredients, a warning that it is for external use only (hello who would use it for anything else!) as well as the usual keep away from eyes, rinse with water if it should get into them, keep out of reach of children and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
They offer a full money back guarantee if you are not 100% happy and give a phone number and the website address for you to seek that refund or replacement.
There is a small line in the tiniest of writing saying that Asda are against animal testing and fund research into alternatives.
A bar code, obviously and the symbol for use within twenty-four months of opening.
I am always very particular about removing my makeup when I wear it and want my skin to be very clean as otherwise my bad tempered skin turns into a nightmare! I get spots at the drop of a hat and so if any trace of makeup is left I will soon know about it.
I have used this bottle up now, I couldn't let it go to waste could I.
I have found that I needed to properly soak the cotton wool, it certainly is NOT a case of less is more! I needed plenty of it and then depending on the amount of makeup I was wearing would need three or four pads soaked in this before I had a clean enough face to use toner.
The information on the back of the bottle says to use after washing but I always use cleansing lotion as a makeup remover and I have to say this is rubbish! With other similar products I use half as much or less and so this works out more than twice as costly.
I find that my toner will still remove plenty of makeup after this has stopped removing anything from my skin. It is not very good at getting off normal mascara so I would think that if you use waterproof mascara you would have no chance what so ever!
I did find that this was gentle enough to use right around and over my eyes without them watering or being in the least bit irritated.
This doesn't have much of a scent to it and although I usually dislike the smell of tea tree products this one is quite fresh and I don't mind it at all.
As the second ingredient listed is alcohol it is rather drying on my temperamental skin but those with oily skin probably wouldn't have to worry about that.
As I used a good toner when ever I used this cleanser I have not had any real problems with my skin but always had to use a lot of both the lotion and cotton wool so am not pleased about value or environmental friendliness as I had to make twice the amount of rubbish.
All in all it isn't the worst product I have ever bought (that was Simple toner, I will explain another time) and it did get me out of a bind, would I buy it again, no, probably not as it worked out more expensive in the long run where you need so much of it to get any cleansing effects, so if I was going to spend twice the amount in the long run, then I might as well spend it up front and get a better product.
Do I recommend it, no, spend a little more and get much better results!
I have given this two out of five stars because although it wasn't good it could have been far worse.
Asda have got an offer on at the moment on their skincare products 2 for £3 (Offer ends 31/12/2008) so if you want to try out this product or another from the range it is a good way of doing it.
If you want to buy from Asda over the internet, find your local store or contact them regarding this product then take a look at their website www.asda.com
(I will review the cleansing wash another time.)
Summary: Spend more and get more! Cheap isn't always a good idea!

- 14/04/08 The two main ingredients, tea tree and witch hazel, are very effective at removing excess oil from the skin so is recommended for people with oily skin. Obviously, they should have put this message on, because for normal etc. skin this product will be too drying. Well reviewed. |
