Advantages: It's worked for me!
Disadvantages: a bit pricey, gets a bit greasy sometimes, runs out quickly
Intro
****
When I first came across the Bio-Oil advert which claimed to be "a specialist skincare product that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone." the skeptical part of my brain immediately kicked in and I concluded fairly quickly that I was not going to be deceived by the twirling orange-tinted sparkle of the image and that it would be a complete waste of money.
A few months later however, I gave in and decided to invest because I wanted to do something about a couple of scar-like patches on my right arm. I was incredibly surprised. Why? In a nutshell: it works. (For me anyway!)
What it looks like
**************
Bio oil comes in a neat white and orange rectangular box which makes it fairly easy to spot in your local beauty store. The different uses of the product are clearly displayed on both the box and the bottle itself. It can be used to treat:
-scars
-stretchmarks
-uneven skin tone
-ageing skin
-dehydrated skin
Personally, I use it to reduce the darkness of scars and sometimes for dehydrated skin. However, because its a little bit pricey I would recommend that you mainly use a good moisturiser for your skin as it'll work out easier on the purse.
Price
****
I normally pay about £8.80 for 60ml, £14.63 for a 125ml bottle in Boots.
I get a generous amount of boots points (32 points for a 60ml bottle) which I can then redeem off my subsequent bottle of Bio-oil so it works out quite well for me.
Still, I would definitely advise having a bit of a browse online, starting with Amazon to see if you can bag it a bit cheaper. Even more so if you're patient enough to wait for delivery.
Applying it
*********
Ideally, Bio-oil should be applied twice a day: once in the morning and once at night before you go to bed. This is of course for optimum effectiveness.
I, however only usually apply it once a day as I'm trying to save the pennies. I only apply it to two different areas which are about 3cm by 3cm wide. After about 5 months of applying it I've seen a marked difference. Scars are less dark and seem a lot smaller because skin looks much more even.
I think if you applied it twice a day and was happy about getting through the silvers that little bit quicker, you would notice a marked difference in less than 6 months.
I've also used the oil as an ointment on a number of occasions, for exampe to sooth inflamed skin, but you must be careful if it appears on the face because the oil is quite greasy.
I've also used it on eczema to reduce that annoying itchy sensation- it tends to get rid of the sensation almost straight away.
When and how to apply
------------------------------
The bottle must be tipped upside down and the oil comes out a small hole at the top. I have to say though, sometimes I've found that when tipping the bottle upside down onto the skin too much comes out so it's good practice to make sure you press it very closely to the skin to avoid any potential leaks. And don't worry if it's a problem to begin with- you'll master it pretty quickly with regular use!
What I'm trying to say
----------------------------
All in all, albeit being a bit greasy and taking its time to work, Bio oil is a great addition to your skin care collection and works wonders for improving the appearance of scars, uneven skin tone and general deep replenishing of the skin.
4/5!
Summary: definitely worth a try!
