Advantages: Medicated, treats all manner of lip issues
Disadvantages: Messy
When I'm at Uni from September to May and I have to get the train at 7.30 in the morning, fighting through howling gales and gusts of snow and rain, my lips do tend to suffer a little. The cold weather dries them out and they end up all cracked and sore. Also, I have a tendency to bite my lips when I'm stressed with assignments and placements etc.
My little group of friends at uni have all discovered Blistex Relief Cream. Each one of us always has a tube in our bags during those winter months.
Packaging
-------------
The little tube of cream comes in a small flat cardboard holder with a little rectangular box to hold the tube of cream. The tube itself looks reassuringly medical. It is about 4 inches long and an inch wide. It is made of metal with the words "Relief Cream" printed in blue on a white background. The lid is a tiny little red, screw on cap which covers a long, narrow nozzle.
The printing in the tube informs us that Blistex Relief Cream in "medicated cream for quick relief of occasional cold sores, cracked, chapped and sore lips." The back of the tube gives the directions for use and the weight - 5g.
Application
----------------
The cream is a very pale yellow/cream colour and smells very minty and medicated. When you open the lid sometimes the cream tends to squeeze out automatically. This can be a major drawback as you really only need a tiny amount for your lips. I usually put a really tiny amount on my pinky and rub it into the lips well.
On the lips
-------------
The cream feels quite moisturising but not greasy. It does tend to lie on the top if the lips though, you really have to rub it in, otherwise it can look a bit white on the lips.
It tastes and smells minty and medicated at the same time. A very clean, almost antiseptic smell. It also creates a lovely tingly, cool feeling on the lips! I love this as you really feel like it's working. The tingly sensation only lasts about a minute or so. After this you are just left with the moisturising effect of the cream.
Effects
---------
When I use this product regularly it really does help to keep my lips in good condition. When they feel all flaky and sore the tingly feeling is quite harsh, but in a good way, you know it's working! The moisture really softens and smoothes dry, chapped, winter lips and stops them from looking all rough and horrible.
The only drawback I found is that if I use this too much (like, several times every day) it tends to leave little red, sore patches at the side of my mouth, almost like my lips have had too much moisture and antiseptic. But that's just if I use it more than is needed.
Conclusion
---------------
I like this product. It is more medicinal than cosmetic and sometimes it can look a little white on the lips. Application can be messy as usually when you take the lid off the product comes right out and you end up with too much.
BUT, it really works. A little tube lasts me for a couple of months and it really does moisturise and soothe the lips. When the lips are sore, the tingly feeling leads to a vague numbness which is great too. Overall, this is a great thing to have when your lips are in bad condition. It can be used regularly if your lips are dry and chapped. If your lips are in pretty good condition, it can still be used fairly frequently just to keep them looking lovely and kissable.
I always keep a tube handy.
Mine cost me £2.35 for a 5g tube from my local pharmacy.
Summary: Great for winter lips

- 03/09/09 Have you tried Carmex? It's another medicated one but not as messy as this one as it's in a tiny tub, I find it excellent. X |
