Advantages: Removes eye make-up with very little effort
Disadvantages: The bottle opening could be improved for easier application
I originally bought Boots Botanics Soothing Eye Make-Up Cleanser because I was given a free Boots voucher to spend (one of those that has to be redeemed on one of a few selected brands). Since I stopped using cleansers that removed all of my eye make-up, I had been going through eye make-up remover quite quickly. I therefore thought that it would make sense to spend my voucher on a new one. I had heard good things about this and another Boots branded eye make-up remover. In the end, I decided to try this one because it looked so pretty! Boots Botanics Soothing Eye Make-Up Cleanser comes in a plastic bottle (cylinder shaped) which is 15cm high and around 4cm wide. The silver lid (and opening) is around 1 1/2 - 2cm across. The bottle is clear, which is great as it is easy to see how much product is left inside, and also handy as before use you have to mix the dual layered product until it forms one colour - much easier to see when the bottle is clear! As mentioned previously, the bottle contains two layers of different coloured liquid. Each fills approximately half of the bottle. The bottom layer of liquid is a lovely pale minty green colour. The top layer of liquid is a pretty blue colour. It looks very good in my bathroom! In total, you get 150ml of product. The label on the bottle is a pale yellow. It contains a product description, tells you the benefits of using the product, how to use the product and it lists the ingredients. The Botanics range contains plant extracts. This eye make-up cleanser contains Cornflower, which the label claims soothes, and wheat proteins which help to condition and strengthen the lashes. To use, you have to shake the bottle until the two coloured liquids mix together to form one colour (a pale blue). Make sure that the lid is on proper
ly before doing this, especially as the bottle opening is so wide! For some reason the directions on the label don't mention that you have to shake the bottle - I imagine they assume that everyone already knows. You then take off the lid and tip some product out onto a cotton wool pad. The label states that you should 'drench' a cotton wool pad. This is where the bottle could be improved. The opening is quite wide, and if you just press the pad over the opening and tip the bottle over, you don't get enough product on the pad. I find that the best method is to pour the product out onto the pad. This requires a steady hand. I prefer bottles that have a tiny opening, which means that you can squirt the product out, and apply as little or as much as you like to the pad, very easily. Whichever method you choose, you have to be quick about it, as the product separates back to the two layers very quickly! Once you have applied the product to a cotton wool pad, you gently wipe off your eye make-up, while your eyes are closed (to avoid eye contact). I wear waterproof mascara and long-lasting eyeshadows and this removes everything effortlessly, therefore causing no damage to the delicate eye area. With some eye make-up removers, I have had to rub and rub the area a few times to get the make-up off, but this takes it all off almost straight away, with just a couple of light wipes. Once you have taken off your eye make-up, the product feels nice on the skin. It doesn't feel oily (it disappears into the skin), and it leaves the area feeling soft. It feels conditioning and soothing as claimed. I'm not sure if it helps to strengthen my lashes (another claim), as I have strong lashes anyway, but it certainly hasn't harmed them. This product is suitable for people with sensitive eyes (it states this on the label). I wear contact lens
es and have had no problem with this product irritating my eyes or skin in any way. Boots Botanics Soothing Eye Make-Up Cleanser costs around £3.99 (and is worth every penny!). This may sound expensive to some of you, but I was used to paying over £10 for an eye make-up remover that does exactly the same job! I have tried other cheap eye make-up removers since buying this (what can I say, I can't resist trying new products!) and they have been nowhere near as good. I will stick with this as long as they continue to make it.

- 11/05/04 I don't wear make up that often, but when I do, I invariably pull out a few eyelashes trying to get it off again. This sounds like it might minimise that! |
